Unlocking the Secrets of Charlotte’s Speakeasies

Unlocking the Secrets of Charlotte’s Speakeasies Relive the revelry of the roaring 20s at one of these hidden watering holes. by Erin Breeden Apr 24, 2017 The Cellar at Duckworth’s What began as secret drinking establishments during the Prohibition years, speakeasies have now morphed into bars that feature just the right amount of nostalgia, inventive handcrafted cocktails and no fear of a police raid. In the past few years, the speakeasy concept has slowly gained steam in Charlotte, with no sign of slowing down. Here are five local favorites to try—that is, if you can find the entrances. Dot Dot Dot With one of Charlotte’s original mixologists at the helm, Dot Dot Dot is one of the most exciting additions to the Charlotte cocktail scene in recent years. Stefan Huebner, formerly of Heist Brewery, curates an innovative cocktail program while still paying homage to a bygone era. Bourbon drinks are the stars of the show—try a Truffle New York Sour, a concoction of bourbon, orange liqueur, truffle egg white, house sweet and sour, and port. Photo by Kyo H Nam Photography The Cellar at Duckworth’s Enter Duckworth’s in Uptown and descend the stairs into a different era, and a different bar. Leave the sports bar vibe behind for a more sophisticated, old-fashioned vibe. The Cellar at Duckworth’s features gastropub fare, an extensive list of beers, and a revolving list of seasonal signature cocktails. The space where the Cellar is located was originally built in 1912 and from the decor, the drinks, to the dress of the staff, it embraces the pre-prohibition era. The Cotton Room Named in honor of the open-air cotton marketplace that once existed in its home of Brevard Court, The Cotton Room combines a modern cocktail menu with the vibe of a bygone era. This southern-inspired joint features beers from the Carolinas, as well as local ingredients and liquors in their craft cocktails. Try the Bartender’s Alchemy, which combines Covington Vodka, St. Germain, lemon juice, honey syrup, apricot bitters and an edible flower. Backstage Lounge The newest kid on the speakeasy scene, Backstage Lounge has already garnered quite a buzz since opening in January. Tucked in the back of taco and tequila joint, SouthBound, access to Backstage is granted by picking up a phone that’s hidden behind a red curtain. The cocktail menu includes classic, signature and house barrel-aged. Try The Fizzy One, which features Method, strawberry vodka, passionfruit puree, egg white, house-made orgeat and yellow chartreuse. Room XIII From the outside, unassuming best describes Room XIII. Located below Emerson Joseph, the men’s grooming lounge on Tryon Street, you may walk right past Room XIII unless you know where to look. But indoors, poker, cocktails and cigars await. But take note: This isn’t a drop in establishment—advance reservations are required.

Charlotte Pours: The Ultimate Cocktail Primer Whether it’s taking a shaken-or-stirred class, visiting a distillery or simply ordering a drink that’s not only tasty but enthusiastically made, here’s how to explore Charlotte’s cocktail culture. by Jodi Helmer It doesn’t take much training to pour a cold beer or a chilled glass of Riesling, but making a craft cocktail is an art—and local mixologists have it perfected. We’ve distilled three popular options for experiencing Charlotte’s craft cocktail culture. Salud! Order a Drink Skip the beer and wine lists and head straight for the cocktail menus at notable restaurants and cocktail bars where classic and creative drinks generate big buzz. Something Old Order an old fashioned, sidecar, Manhattan, negroni or Moscow mule at Soul Gastrolounge, Dot Dot Dot or Heirloom where bartenders have mastered the art of mixing up classic cocktails. Namesake punches such as Top of the Hill Punch, made with gin, Champagne, blackberries, rosemary, lemon and Earl Grey tea, are designed to be shared. Take a Tour Indulge your love of imbibing by going straight to the source, where you can meet the folks who make your favorite beverages and see what goes into creating a craft spirit. You’ll get the inside scoop on what makes each restaurant and recipe special while sampling amazing foods and craft beverages. Taste Carolina also features craft cocktails on their culinary tours. Top Charlotte mixologist Bob Peters, the creative force behind the craft cocktail menu at The Punch Room, leads the themed classes. Heirloom Restaurant also offers cocktail classes. Join the Club The Whiskey Club of Ballantyne at The Ballantyne, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Charlotte is not a hands-on class but the monthly events, which include tastings from the impressive collection of whiskeys featured on the restaurant menu, emphasize education. Sample single malts, small batch bourbons and flagship whiskeys from around the world while learning about their origins and flavor profiles.

Spend 24 Hours Supporting Hispanic-Owned Businesses

Spend 24 Hours Supporting Hispanic-Owned Businesses From a store full of homemade items to fan-favorite restaurants, Hispanic-owned businesses add to Charlotte’s vibrant culture. by Charlie Leonard Whether you’re visiting Charlotte or you call the Queen City home, here’s how you can spend 24 hours supporting businesses owned by members of the city’s Latino and Hispanic community. Morning If you’ve never had a Colombian breakfast, that’s about to change. Both owners of Mi Tierra are originally from Pereira, a mountainous city in Colombia known for its vast coffee-growing region, so you can rest assured that the dishes are authentic. Opt for the Desayuno Mi Tierra, a filling entrée served with a cheese-covered corn cake, pork rind, sausage and sweet plantains, or the Huevos Pericos, with scrambled eggs with green onions and tomatoes. Wash your breakfast down with a fresh cup of coffee at any of Mi Tierra’s three locations in Pineville, South Charlotte and Plaza Midwood. On your way out, grab a Pan de Bono, a Colombian cheese bread, for the road. Pineville-Matthews Road is home to many great South American restaurants tucked inside large shopping centers that you otherwise may miss. Case in point, Las Americas, a delicious Colombian restaurant in the Tower Place Festival Shopping Center. Serving a variety of scrambled egg plates for breakfast, Las Americas packs a protein punch to get your morning started right. After you’ve had breakfast, treat yourself to something sweet at The Batchmaker in Wesley Heights. Owner Cristina Rojas-Agurcia, known as “The Batchmaker,” grew up baking cakes and brownies for bake sales in Honduras before moving to the United States in 2006. With plenty of local and national acclaim to go around, The Batchmaker is one of Charlotte’s most popular bakeries. Grab one of the famous oatmeal cream pies and sit for a bit inside the chic dining room. You’ll want to get there quick because everything goes fast. Afternoon Calle Sol Head over to Pura Vida Worldly Art in the vibrant NoDa neighborhood. Owner Teresa Hernandez opened the store in 2004 with a simple mission: introduce the shoppers in Charlotte to the rich traditions of artisans from around the world. These traditions are displayed through rich collection of art, crafts, jewelry and other wares in Hernandez’s store. This includes everything from Frida Kahlo earrings and embroidered dresses from Mexico to crosses and peace signs made in Uganda. By now, it’s lunchtime, so head over to Plaza Midwood for some of Charlotte’s best ceviche at Calle Sol. Inspired by the sun-soaked beaches of Florida and the dynamic cuisines of Peru and Cuba, you’ll find four types of ceviche dishes alongside Cuban sandwiches, croquetas and chaufa, a Chino-Latino stir-fried rice. If you’re ready for a cocktail, pair your dish with a classic rum drink like a mojito, fresh daiquiri or pisco sour. If you’d rather have tacos, a short drive down Central Avenue brings you to Tacos El Nevado in East Charlotte. Each taco rings up at only $3 and they’re packed with your choice of meat, cheese and fresh veggies. Some of the more popular options include tacos with steak, chicken, beef barbacoa, al pastor pork and tongue. No matter what you choose, a side of chips and guacamole is a must. For more lunch options, try the Chuleta de Cerdo braised pork loin at Los Paisas or a rotisserie chicken with sides at Hello Chicken, both in Pineville. After lunch, enjoy some retail therapy at El Potrero Western Wear, in the Eastway Crossing Shopping Center, where you’ll find plenty of Western-style hats from the United States and Mexico. Choose a classic straw cowboy hat or browse the selection of boots, shirts, jackets and accessories for men and women.
